Relationship with God

The most important relationship in our life is our relationship with God. When we receive God’s gift of eternal life we become part of the family of God. The Bible says, “But as many as received him (Jesus), to them gave he power to become the sons of God, even to them that believe on his name:” Though we can never lose the wonderful gift of eternal life once we’ve received it, our relationship with God can grow cold if we don’t take measures to strengthen it. Just like a Father and son that don’t speak to each other, if we neglect our relationship with God by being disobedient and refusing to communicate with Him, our relationship will become strained. We will always be His child but sin in our life can make us miss out on the joys of having a healthy relationship with our heavenly Father.

The first step of obedience after receiving the gift of eternal life is baptism. While our baptism cannot save us, it will show our heavenly Father and the rest of the world that we believe that Jesus Christ came, died, was buried, and rose again, in order to purchase the gift of eternal life for us. After baptism we can continue to develop our relationship with God by making sure that we keep the lines of communication open with Him. This happens in two ways. God communicates with us through His word, the Bible. Then, we communicate with God through prayer and worship.

Therefore, if we want to achieve good communication with our heavenly Father we need to put a few things into practice. First, we need to spend time reading God’s word every day. As we do this we will begin to understand what God is like. Secondly, we need to spend time in prayer every day. God wants to be involved in every area of our life and He loves for us to talk to Him. Then as we begin to know God better, we should begin living our lives in a manner that pleases Him. The ultimate goal of our life should be that everything we do, be done to please Him. A good way to ensure that every aspect of our life is pleasing to God, is to memorize scripture. This allows God’s word to become an integral part of our thought process.

In addition to these ways of communication, we need to set aside time to worship God. We can do this both individually and corporately. We do this individually when we set aside time to pray and tell God how great we think He is. Then we can do the same thing corporately with other believers by faithfully attending services at church.

Behold, I stand at the door and knock: if any man hear my voice, and open the door, I will come in to him, and will sup with him, and he with me.
